What is culture?
Three cultural classification methods
I think that "studying a language" means "studying a culture."
To begin with, there are many different ways to look at culture. I'll introduce three of them.

Category 1: High Culture and General Culture
High culture , also known as Big C , is the manifested and formal culture, the best in life. Examples include art, science and technology, literature, and thought.
On the other hand, general culture , also known as Small C , is the underlying, latent culture, the everyday life of ordinary citizens, such as values, ways of thinking, language, and physical expression.
In the past, foreign language education focused on Big C, but now it is essential to understand Small C cultures in order to understand people from different cultures.
Category 2: Island of Culture (Carter)
Consciousness level (above island ↑)
Visible parts: architecture, clothing, food, etc.
Unconscious level (in the ocean)
The invisible part: perspectives, ways of thinking, values, code of conduct, etc.
Universal Level (Earth Part)
Behaviors necessary for survival, emotions such as joy, anger, sadness, communication, social cooperation, eating, sleeping, and dressing.
Category 3: Dominant culture and subculture
Dominant culture (total culture)
The mainstream, representative, or typical culture of society
Subculture
What is distinct from the dominant culture is the relevant culture.
Under the dominant culture as a whole, there are subcultures for each group (age, gender, class, region, etc.)
First of all, there are two ways of thinking about time.
M-time (monochrome time): A time spent focusing on schedules and getting things done one by one
Time is treated like a commodity. Time can be "used," "saved," "wasted," or "lost," and schedules such as time commitments and deadlines are strictly adhered to as sacred.
P-time ( Polychronic Time): Plural time. Emphasis on the situation at hand. A way of using time to accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously.
Promises and deadlines are merely goals to strive for and are not binding.
Four communication skills
Communication is the process by which people interact with each other through the reception of messages in a given context.
Communication is always two-way and simultaneous, and the meaning is determined by the recipient's interpretation.
We often hear people say that someone has high or low communication skills, but what does that mean when we say that someone is socially awkward?
Communication skills are
1. Language ability : Ability to create correct sentences
2. Conversational ability : The ability to communicate in a clear and orderly manner in sentences and paragraphs in conversational writing.
3. Sociolinguistic ability : The ability to use appropriate language depending on the place, person, etc.
4. Strategic ability : The ability to overcome communication obstacles caused by lack of language ability
Communication Strategy
Avoidance : Reduce the content you want to convey or simplify it.
Changing the topic : When you don't understand what the other person is saying, change the topic instead of replying.
Passing : Ignoring parts you don't understand
Paraphrase : to rephrase or add to something
Gesture Language : (Non-verbal Communication)
Three communication technologies
1. Epoche (Judgement withheld)
When coming into contact with a different culture and it is difficult to judge or evaluate based on one's own cultural values, it is best to suspend judgment for the time being and observe the situation.
What this means is that even if you see unexpected behavior or hear something, you should stay calm for a moment. Don't get angry or upset at the other person, and don't express your feelings directly, in order to first understand what is happening, because it may be due to cultural differences. Furthermore, make your judgments after listening to members of different cultures and experiencing things yourself.
2. Empathy
It means understanding and sharing the other person's situation within the framework of their values. It means putting yourself in their shoes and feeling the same way as them.
3. Assertive Communication
A communication method that allows you to appropriately assert your own thoughts and feelings while respecting others (respect for yourself and others)
AI is making remarkable progress. AI is becoming more and more personified. In the future, humans may learn communication skills from AI.
